Of course, Art is up for interpretation...Is in the eye of the beholder, but I will define Interpretive Art Portraiture here for our purposes. Interpretive Portraits are portraits where the personality of the subject is revealed through involvement with some activity. It could be the activity of meditation, of relationship with the newest member of the family, soccer, or just about anything. Usually, in interpretive portraits, the subject is not looking back at the viewer, (the camera). That isn't a hard and fast rule, but a generality. This is opposed to "Literal", or "Documentary" portraits. There really aren't any "hard and fast rules" in art.
Art Portraits: While many will say it has to be Black & White to be an "Art Portrait", I will declare that any portrait that is designed, executed and finished as a piece of art is an Art Portrait! That would even include portraits where the subject is just standing there in a clown suit looking back at you! Certainly most art is in color. So, again, I will say it is the intent, execution and finishing of the portrait that makes it Art Portraiture.
You can see in the examples above that sometimes we will incorporate multiple images, unique border treatments, colorizing Black & White, or combining Black & White with color. The point is to create a portrait that is uniquely beautiful.
