The art of capturing the essence of the subject, whether relationships, personality or emotion, and transposing it to paper, canvas or stone.
Art Portraiture vs Documentary Photos... Anyone with a camera can snap a picture. If you can turn on a light switch and focus, you qualify to operate a fixed-beam "portrait studio" such as found in the "Big Box" outlets. These snapshot portraits are valuable as inexpensive documentary portraits.
Fine art portraiture reached a pinnacle during the 'High Renaissance" period with such masters as Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Titian, etc. With the advent of photographic science came the Photographic Portrait Artist. The traditions of fine art portraiture were passed from the painting masters on to photographic artists.
In today's modern world, the magic of photographic science is available to everyone thanks to one-use, "disposable" cameras, and an abundance of one-hour labs. Today, everybody is able to enjoy making photographs, and try their hand at being artistic.
As with any vocation, there are some people who are drawn to the art and science of portrait photography, who study it, and dedicate themselves to the artistry of photography as their life's work. I am one such person. ___SPC II

Family Portraits are among the most treasured possesions there are, for billions of reasons. As Hawaii Family Fine Art Portrait Photographers we understand the importance and value of beautiful, finely crafted family portraits. In every case it is our goal for you to look your very best in every portrait we create. In Family Portraits we also want to show relationships within your family. We achieve these goals by careful use of lighting, placement and pose.
I'm allways surprised when people say to me, "Gee, I thought we were just going to sit over there, and you'd snap a couple shots. I didn't know you were going to be so careful about lights and what-not!" I guess there are a number of portrait studios where they still, "Say CHEEESE....One, Two THREE!" Snap! But that's NOT how I like to make portraits. Sure, everyone has their own way of saying "Cheese", but I don't think that gets a genuine expression. I'd rather you didn't smile if you aren't comfortable smiling!
The best portrait photographers capture real expressions, the real personalities of their subjects. That's what true photographic portraiture is. Otherwise, how is it different from a 'snapshot'? At Paramount Photography Hawaii, we love working with people and bringing out and capturing the essence of their personalities. Give us a call, and we'll set up a Free, No Obligation Consultation where we can talk about your Family Portraits. We want to be Your Hawaii Portrait Photographers! call (808) 841-7733
There are two basic genres of portraiture: Literal, and Interpretive. Within these genres there are many styles defined by lighting, pose, and props. Literal Portraits are documentary in nature and have the subject(s) looking back at the viewer, and usually in an obviously posed posture. Interpretive Portraits have a more candid appearance where the subject(s) are not looking back at the viewer, and appear to be involved in some kind of activity.
I hope you've enjoyed viewing these sample portraits, and those in my other portrait Galleries, and hope to be able to create portraits for You sometime while you are in Hawaii. Please feel free to email me, (click on "Contact Us" at the top of the page), or call any time for a free, no obligation portrait consultation. (808) 841-7733
If you haven't guessed, People are my favorite subjects to photograph. Don't get me wrong, I love to create beautiful, artistic images of Objects for commercial use or pure visual enjoyment. And obviously, (if you've seen my Stock, Cloudscapes and Flower Galleries), I'm moved to make images of Hawaiian Landscapes, Clouds and Flowers from time to time as well. But People are the best! In fact, I take a bit of my portrait photography mindset with me to every assignment.
